San Marzano tomato has a Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) and is grown exclusively in the Agro Sarnese-Nocerino area, where the company Manfuso Srl is also located. The production of canned San Marzano DOP tomatoes has been the flagship product of this preserving company since 1983.
San Marzano DOP tomatoes have an ancient cultivation tradition, featuring a longer shape than regular tomatoes, a bright red color, dense and fleshy pulp, and a slightly bitter-sweet taste. Their cultivation and processing are strictly regulated and protected by a rigorous production protocol and the San Marzano DOP Tomato Consortium, which ensures traditional row planting and manual harvesting. San Marzano DOP tomatoes can only be processed into whole peeled tomatoes or fillets.
